The Mindful Corner Podcast

Hosted by clinical psychologist Dr. Erika Velez, The Mindful Corner is a series of candid conversations with everyday individuals from all walks of life–single parents, college students, career professionals, roaming travelers, and more–who share stories in the hopes that we can earn from each other and, simultaneously, grow together. Have you ever experienced a moment in your life that felt isolating and hopeless? Did you wish you could connect with someone who was dealing with the same emotions you felt? Although our experiences as individuals may be unique, there's far more that we have in common than what separates us. The Mindful Corner will be our place to have authentic and raw conversations about the human experience while discussing the gift of mindfulness and how we can all benefit from some time in a mindful corner.

Men must be strong and "man up", or at least that’s what the overwhelming echo of society wants us all to believe. But to men facing significant misfortunes, traumas and heartache, a culture promoting strength in the realm of emotions is disappointing and far from helpful, to say the least. In this episode of The Mindful Corner Podcast, host Dr. Erika Velez speaks to her first-ever male guest, Victor, husband and soon-to-be father of three, about what it means to be a failure and the value that failing can have in our lives. He shares his account of struggle and the lessons he’s learned about himself and his life after surrendering to external preoccupations he was previously fixated on.

When you said you gave up, it sounded like you surrendered. It’s then that God, the universe, or whatever higher power you believe in, leads us toward answering ‘What am I really here for?’”-- Dr. Velez
